Book Review: A Night Devine by Dawn Kinzer
A Night Devine is part of the Melodies of Christmas Love box set* that contains stories from Lynette Bonner, JoAnn Durgin, Annette M. Irby, Chautona Havig, and Leslie Ann McDaniel.
After having had the pleasure of reading and reviewing Dawn Kinzer’s novel, By All Appearances, last year, I jumped at the chance to continue with the Tate family stories.
At the beginning of A Night Devine, Cameron Tate has begun walking her path to redemption. Still, she has a need for a relationship with God and a desire to find meaning for her life. Then, tragedy brings the opportunity to become involved with Trace Gardener’s efforts to help feed Seattle’s homeless.
Trace runs a church-based meal program as he keeps secret his own checkered past, one that involves Cameron’s family, though she doesn’t realize it. While Trace questions Cameron’s devotion to the mission, his attraction to her grows deeper.
I felt for Cameron as she struggled to become more than just a pretty face, to find her place and be taken seriously as a woman of compassion. I also felt for Trace as he fought against slipping back into the lifestyle that drove him to begin his mission in the first place, one he’d left behind.
In short, A Night Devine is a thoroughly enjoyable and captivating story, which provides the reader with a sweet romance and encourages practicing benevolence toward those less fortunate. It was a wonderful introduction to the rest of the collection, which I am preparing to read!
