Book Review: Hidden Agenda by Lisa Harris

His cover is blown.

Now his enemies are on his heels and closing in.

Hidden Agenda is the third book in the Southern Crimes series by Lisa Harris. I recommend reading this series in order. You’ll find my review of book two Fatal Exchange here.

Michael Hunt is in trouble with drug dealers … and, maybe, his mother. He’s an undercover cop whose family and friends think he’s been dead for eight months. The truth is, he might soon be if someone doesn’t save him. Trapped on an island off the coast of Georgia, his cover is blown and his efforts to take down a drug lord are on the verge of disintegrating.

That’s when Olivia Hamilton and her deaf brother, Ivan, enter the picture. On the island to visit their father over Christmas, the illegitimate siblings have no idea the man they see once or twice a year is a criminal. When Ivan witnesses the murder of a Federal agent and learns Michael will soon die, he enlists the aid of his sister to save a life. Doing so sends all three on the run from the Cartel de Rey and dirty cops.

Michael chose to continue his work, even when he knew what his choice did to his family, so there’s a good deal of guilt there. He’s also burned out and worried he’s losing his “real” self. Olivia is the type of journalist who is happy reporting small, benign stories. She doesn’t want to claw her way to the top. She’s a woman who wants a settled, peaceful life, taking care of her brother. She has a hard time believing the man described in the anonymous emails she’s received is her father.

As soon as I read the preview chapter of this book at the end of Fatal Exchange, I knew it was a novel I had to read, and I don’t regret one minute spent with it open on my lap. I’ve read the whole series and believe this to be the best story. It opens with a punch—literally—and continues non-stop until the end. There’s also a great twist I didn’t see coming.

So, if you’re a fan of Christian romantic suspense, I highly recommend this series, especially Hidden Agenda.

How do you feel about the necessity of reading a series in order, even if each book has a different main character(s)?

Sounds like a high-intensity thriller! Might have to scoop this one up, but I’ll be reading it with sweaty palms I bet. 🙂

I prefer to read books in order, but if the first blurbs don’t interest me, then I just go for the book that does.

I definitely recommend this one in order, though it won’t hurt to read them the other way. I read the second book first (which had the first chapter of Hidden Agenda at the back), then the first. They’re all readable! 🙂
