It’s Over!

Remember that scene at the beginning of the movie, Romancing the Stone? Kathleen Turner’s character bawls her eyes out, takes a deep breath, and celebrates after bringing her latest book to a satisfying conclusion. So realistic…

Last Thursday, I jumped up and down, praising God for the ability to type six little letters:

T-H-E E-N-D

For two weeks, I struggled over the ending of my current project Wings of Refuge. I knew how it was to conclude. I even had bits and pieces of it down. But filling in the gaps was like trying to ford a river without a bridge, in a fast current, and being unable to swim. Yes, all of those.

I kept wanting my characters to say their adieus in a couple of pages, but they weren’t ready. And, believe me, when they dig in their heels, they ain’t goin’ nowhere fast!

Better late than never, I realized I had my priorities out of whack. I did the last thing first and the first thing last. Rather than pray first and write second, I did the opposite. The truly ironic part is that the spiritual theme of my story is giving God control and trusting Him to help you through whatever problem you have. Don’t tell me you can’t learn anything through fiction—even when you’re the author!

So, when was the last time you were able to put “The End” to a problem through prayer? Did it take a while to get your priorities straight?

Ah, and one more ending! Good-bye to winter and…
